In 1919 then twenty-year-old Swedish artist Thora Klinckowstrom (1899-1995) went to Paris to study sculpture. That year, she met Modigliani at the Café de la Rotonde. Modigilani’s portrait of her is made up of a series of ovoid forms arranged in a fluid curve. The elongated neck highlights the model’s elegant femininity. During the last years of his life, Modigliani painted many such attenuated portraits, which refine the essence of the sitter.
