LR-19158 - Hovertravel have been running a commercial public transport service for some 45 years, flying across the Solent in under ten minutes. As a personal note, the service here is second to none, you are treated like a paying customer, with hello's, thank you's and updated if there are any issues; other services are available but without good old customer service.
The concept of the Hovercraft designed by Sir Christopher Cockerell whilst at Saunders Roe (who designed and built the Flying boats), later he worked for Westland's, where the Hovercraft was developed commercially with C.H. Latimer-Needham famous for adding the skirt!
The crossing takes about ten minutes and another 10 or so to be connected to the fast London trains. The steps are used for passengers to board or exit the craft and there is always someone close at hand to help you on or off, take your luggage etc. Next quickest service is around 25 minutes, which tends to be 30/35 minutes.
