the machine

He began by sketching the first design for his time machine.

The equations seemed elegant at first, a symmetry he could almost feel in his bones. Weeks slipped into months, the diagrams sharpening with each revision. He spoke less to colleagues, stopped answering the door, lived only for the mechanism that would fold time back on itself.

When at last the device hummed to life, he felt triumph so pure it silenced every doubt. He set the coordinates: backwards, not far, only a few years, just to test the premise. The machine flared, the air bent, and the world tilted.

He stumbled, dizzy, into his own workshop. Everything looked the same, but cleaner, younger. On the bench lay untouched paper, blank and waiting. His head ached with a pressure that felt like déjà vu grown unbearable. He sat, found a pencil in his hand, and without thinking began to sketch.

He began by sketching the first design for his time machine.
