replace these bushes
Before installing gearbox, replace bushes on the extension, there is one on each side, at the bottom of the forks, and one at the top (arrowed)
I think most stories of R154's shifting like a truck box can be atributed to sad bushes (one of mine had collapsed and rendered the whole spring/fork setup useless.)after fitting new bushes -GREAT!
If bushes are worn, it does shift like a truck- think 1928 Studebaker, going up a steep hill with a full load of pigs on board-that bad!, ( grunty noises as well)
Replace rear drive shaft seal before installing, cost about $5, and a lot easier to install out of the car.
