Derwent Haematite Ironworks Signal Box, Workington, Cumberland

The view from Derwent Crossings, 1981. Behind the signal box at the end of Jubilee Cottages is an interesting piece of wartime infrastructure (which I never got to, unfortunately): an air-raid shelter? It isn't marked on any plans as a pill-box, and it has a great thick concrete roof. Ideas, anyone? The track-bed to the LHS of the pill-box ran past what was Wilkinson's Wagon Works, and led up to Harrington Junction on the C&WJR.

Behind all this is the Bessemer Training School and the Steelworks offices.
