Bubble Lake
Never been to Banff in winter. The trip was planned to see Bubble Lake.
Bubble Lake refers to Abraham Lake. It is about three-hour driving from Banff. The best time to see Bubble Lake is in January and February. Because of the strong wind, all the snow on the lake surface was blown away, exposing the frozen ice surface, and the bubbles below could be clearly seen due to the methane bubbles from decaying plants.
There are two best viewpoints, Preacher and View point. The water in Viewpoint is relatively deep, the ice is dark green, however the water in Preacher is shallow, and the ice on the lake is mostly white.
Visited there three times. The snow covered most of the area for the first two times’ visiting, the last time was Friday (Feb.3, 2023). Due to the strong wind on Wednesday, the snow on the ice surface was almost blown away. A total of more than 8 hours of walking on the ice for three times visiting.
The best quality crampons and heavy winter jacket are recommended.
