Portrait of a Gentleman by Ladbrooke Clarke and Wallace of Bury St Edmunds

The photographers were Ladbrooke Clarke and Wallace of Bury St Edmunds.

I haven't seen another cdv photo with the same partnership so this make this photo interesting.

According to earlyphotographers website Clarke and Wallace were in partnership

Clarke being John William Clarke, above. Malster mentions that they had a studio at 28 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds, in May 1866. Two advertisements in the 'Bury and Norwich Post', s. The partnership was still functioning on 18th July 1867. By 3rd December1867, however, Clarke was operating under just his own name at 28 Angel Hill, but was identifying his business in a sub-heading as 'Late Clarke and Wallace'.

John William Clarke photos when he is working for himself appear frequently. John Clarke was born in Bury St Edmunds in around 1823 and his occupation in 1861 was that of a Magistrate Deputy Lieutenant living at 100 Whiting St.

He began working as a photographer in the 1860's firstly in partnership with a Nr Wallace

By 1871 the census records him as a photographer and he was living at 3 the Meat Market in Bury. His business must have progressed well as by 1881 he was living at 7 Angel Hill with his wife Martha and children including son & photographer John P Clarke. By 1891 he is shown as having retired to live in Felixstowe.

During his career he seems to have worked in a number of addresses in Bury St Edmunds including 28 Angel Hill , Whiting St , 3 Meat Market , Cemetery Rd or renamed Kings Rd , 31 and 41 Abbeygate St 1 Woolhall St and 7 Angel or Abbey Hill which is the most address which appears.
