Back of the card says the photographer is patronized by the HH The Maharajah Duleep Singh. He is buried at Eleveden and was the last King of the Punjab. He died on 21 October, 1893 meaning this card predates this.
Also patronized by the Prince of Wales at this time this was Edward V11 commonly known as Bertie by the family and by the name Dirty Bertie to many for his bedroom exploits with many women.
Also patronized by the Duke of Cambridge. In 1880's this was Prince George a cousin of Queen Victoria and grandson of George III.
John Clarke was born in Bury St Edmunds in around 1823. He married Martha Palmer at Southwold, Suffolk in 1847.
The 1861 census records his occupation as that of a Magistrate Deputy Lieutenant living at 100 Whiting St.
He began working as a photographer in the 1860's firstly in partnership with a Mr Wallace trading as Clarke and Wallace, photographers, at 28 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds in early 1867 .
By 1871 the census records him as a photographer and he was living at 3 the Meat Market in Bury.
According to Early photographers www.early-photographers.org.uk/Suf C.html - Jarman says that the firm also had premises in King's Road, Bury. These are shown in a photograph dating from the early 1870s, where a yard formed an open-air studio for equestrian pictures. In December 1874 there was an auction of a 'garden, stable and photographic studio of Mr J W Clarke' in Cemetery Road, the renamed King's Road. Yet to see any photos with this address.
His business must have progressed well as by 1881 he was living at 7 Angel Hill with his wife Martha and children including son & photographer John Palmer Clarke. His daughter Kate C Clarke acted as a ‘photographer’s assistant’ and younger son Arthur E. Clarke was a university student.
During his career he seems to have worked in a number of addresses in Bury St Edmunds including 28 Angel Hill , Whiting St , 3 Meat Market , Cemetery Rd or renamed Kings Rd , 31 and 41 Abbeygate St 1 Woolhall St and 7 Angel or Abbey Hill which is the most common address found on his photos .
Martha his wife died and was buried at Bury St. Edmund’s cemetery on 14 July 1890.
By 1891 he is shown as having retired to live in Felixstowe.Therefore this photo must predate 1891 and be from the 1880's
John Clarke died in 1893. His obituary in ‘The Bury & Norwich Post’ of 21 February 1893, reports that he died in Ipswich on 14th February, aged 70, having retired (initially to Felixstowe) ‘a few years ago’
