Photographer - J.W.Clarke 7 Abbey Hill, Bury St Edmunds Suffolk
Negative no not shown
Back of the card says the photographer is patronized by the Duke of Cambridge - see previous photo I loaded on to flickr by the same photographer it has a different back to the photo detailing other patrons not shown here.
John Clarke was born in Bury St Edmunds in around 1823. He married at Southwold in 1847, Martha Palmer (born 1818). On the census records his occupation in 1861 was that of a Magistrate Deputy lieutenant living at 100 Whiting St.
When he began his career as a photography I am not sure but Suffolk Painters Website records that he was in partnership with a Mr. Wallace trading as Clarke and Wallace at 28 Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds in early 1867. Later that year this partnership finished and he was on his own. In December 1874 there was an auction of a 'garden, stable and photographic studio of Mr J W Clarke' in Cemetery Road now known as the King's Road
By 1871 census he was living at 3 the Meat Market now known as The Traverse in Bury St Edmunds
His business must have progressed well as by 1881 he was living at 7 Angel Hill also known as 7 Abbey Hill with his wife Martha and children including son & photographer John P Clarke and daughter Kate Clarke a photographers assistant
His wife Martha died in 1890 and this seems to coincide with his decision to retire and the 1891 census shows him retired and living in Felixstowe.
John William Clarke died in 1893 in Ipswich.
He is probably best known for his topographical photography of Bury and Suffolk area and for having photographed the Prince of Wales , Duke of Cambridge and the Maharajah Duleep Singh.
Therefore this photo must predate 1881 and be from the 1870's
