A place out of time
This shot was taken about 15 mins after the previous post, looking at the horizon directly opposite to where the sun had set, roughly north east-ish. It was this view that had me grinning from ear to ear because, apart from the great wooded hill foreground, I couldn't believe the amazing pastel colours that had appeared in the mist and hazy sky. In fact I was so enraptured by the view i almost forgot to take a shot! I used my 70-200mm lens set at 145mm, so what you can't see in this scene is the band of pastel yellow just above the band of pastel pink. When I tilted my head sideways all the coloured bands together took on the appearance of a rainbow, a straight rainbow that is! I believe the effect is similar to how a normal rainbow is caused but quite what the details are that create this particular phenomenon I've no idea yet. Maybe there's a physicist or meteorologist out there in flickrland who can explain it to me. It has to be viewed in L, folks! :-)
BTW, what look like clouds in the distance are in fact columns of steam from the Stanlow Oil Refinery on the banks of the River Mersey 25 miles away. Ironic isn't it, how something so ugly and man-made as an oil refinery, producing unenvironmentally friendly products, can actually add subtle beauty to a natural landscape scene. C'est la vie!
