Is brain surgery difficult?

Is brain surgery difficult? Not as much as one would think - it’s the danger factor that makes decision-making challenging for doctors. Leading English neurosurgeon Henry Marsh CBE FRCS graces #Maastricht with his presence this evening giving a lecture about medical decision-making hosted by @studium_generale_maastricht. Marsh tells us that this process involves an incredible amount of emotion, and that doctors find it difficult to strike a balance between compassion for their patients and professional detachment.

The #StudiumGenerale lectures cover topics as wide ranging as philosophy, politics, brain surgery and gaming and are free and open to all residents in our city.

Also pictured in our photo series is Maastrichtenaar Ludo Hellemans who translated Henry Marsh’s book Admissions: A life in brain surgery into Dutch. A wealth of local and international talent in Maastricht this evening.
