Sharon Jones, transcendant

On 29 June 2016 at 9:30 The Dap Kings began their set on the big stage in the Quartier des Spectacles, the official opening act of Montreal's International Jazz Festival. After a few minutes of instrumental playing the two women backup singers came out and sang a few songs. Well before 10 pm (22h) Sharon Jones herself came out, picked up the mic stand, put it at the back of the stage near the drum kit, then came forward and began singing and dancing. She would not stop until midnight. She apologized to the audience for her lack of hair and energy: she was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer (!!).

Five months later on November 18, 2016 Sharon Jones passed from this world, succumbing to the cancer she'd fought so valiantly, surrounded by her family and The Dap Kings. A force of nature has left our stage after only sixty years.

The past was a rough year: Bernie Worrell, David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen...all left us this year. The first three provided a soundtrack to my life, the last was a renown gentleman and good spirit who would openly and happily engage everyone on the streets of Montreal. But this one really, really hurt...

Somewhere in heaven, the angels are taking a break and are being treated to a jam session for the ages...

My recommended track: "100 Days, 100 Nights"
