Dave's Walking Diary 2016
Walk 29 - Bannau Sir Gaer (The Camarthen Fans) - 15 miles
Also known as Y Mynydd Du - The Black Mountain, not to be confused with The Black Mountains which are further east.
Without a doubt, one of the best walks of the year...
Starting from Glyntawe a short steep slog takes you up to Allt Fach where the ascent becomes more gradual along the south ridge of Fan Hir. A short drop and climb and Fan Brycheiniog is in the bag. A short stroll out to Fan Foel is rewarded by vast panoramic views to the north. Another drop then it's back up to Picws Du and an easy stroll along the cliffs of Bannau Sir Gaer to Waun Lefrith.
When I was younger and more energetic I headed out to Carreg Yr Ogof and Garreg Las from here before returning across the wilderness of Banwen Gwyn. But this time I headed north and dropped down to the shores of Llyn y Fan Fach before following a path that contoured around the base of the cliffs to Llyn y Fan Fawr and onwards back to the main road and the car
