Copper Clad
Using shears, I trim the clad down to the board's size plus some padding around the periphery of the design.
I follow up with 0000-grade steel wool to remove any dirt and oil from the surface, after which I no longer handle the clad with my hands. (Finger/hand oils interfere with the ferric chloride bath.) Instead, I use small pliers to manipulate the clad after I've cleaned it.
Lastly, I use alcohol to clean up any steel dust left behind from the steel wool scrubbing.
