Sun Ra Mural in Vernon Park

Sun Ra was a jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances. He was the leader of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra. Although he was born in Alabama, and lived in Chicago and New York, he spent his final years in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood.
