White River in Black and White.

This is White River over on the east side of Mount Hood.

I took this photo one day a while back while I was with a client. I took this photo to demonstrate three things. The first was that even on a plane old mediocre day with no meaningful cloud structure or even any color a person can get a beautiful photo with the right subject and technique. The second point that I was making here was about the comp. I let my client look the view over and take a few photos before I suggested that we walk down to the water's edge and make the water the whole foreground. The third point that I made was concerning the shutter speed. This photo was made at 1/4 of a second.

The approach that my client made when confronted with this scene was to shoot with a wide angle lens standing at a high prominence taking in the whole scene. This made the mountain, and everything really, appear to be small. They also slowed their shutter speed down to about 2-3 seconds which made the water very smooth, almost plain white. If you look at this photo, with its 1/4 second shutter speed, you will notice detail in the water, including lines that go with the flow of the water as well as splashes and drops flying around. You can even perceive bubbles in the water.

Once I went down to the river's edge and demonstrated this method and this composition, and showed it to them on my preview screen, they had to go give it a try themselves. They were happy with the results. :)
