Branding Day - the first step

I was fortunate to be able to take photos at a branding today. New calves need to be branded and immunized at each ranch in the spring. This is the real deal - not a rodeo or a staged event, and most city folks are unaware that this sort of thing still takes place in areas like the Bear Lake Valley, Idaho.

In this photo a cowboy has roped a calf which is about to have its hind legs roped as well. I plan to post more of the action in the next few days.
