Mr Gnome and I can think of few odours more pong-perfect than the unutterably delicious combination of whiffs released in the annual ritual of the making of Christmas cakes. Brandy, lemon and orange zest, almonds, more brandy, dried fruit, grated apple. Home and friendship and comfort and kindness and memory and happiness and love. Whoops, got a bit carried away...
