GEM Discount Store located at 555 Floresta Blvd. in San Leandro,CA. This store was open only to people who were employed by the government... city leaders, police, fire, military personel and their families. The name was an acronym for Governemnt Employees Mart. In 1970 the descion was made to open these store to the general public. The change was somewhat unclear as the GEM name still remained in place and their were strict guidelines for joining prior to becoming public. This store closed in 1972 and the building would sit vacant until 1975 when The Treasury opened one of their stores in the newly renovated site. The Treasury closed in the mid 1980's and the building was heavily remodled for a PaknSave Foods and a Service Merchandise store which opened in the late 1980's. The Service Merchandise closed in the mid 1990's and the building is now occupied by a Dd's Discouts. PaknSave however is still open.
