White Front Discount Store South San Francisco,CA
Former White Front Discount Department Store located at 180 El Camino Real in South San Francisco,CA. White Front opened this store on November 11th 1965 and closed in the Fall of 1973. On March 4th 1975 a discount store operated by JC Penney under the name "The Treasury" ventured into the SF Bay Area taking over many of the closed White Front stores. The Treasury was generally the same as White Front with a supermarket operating in 1/4 of the building and the remaining 3/4 for non-food items (housewares, electronics, etc.) The Treasury closed this location along with their additional SF Bay Area locations sometime in the early 1980's. All of the buildings were now vacant again. This location was sub-divided to house a Sav-on Drug Store, Service Merchandise, and Safeway Supermarket. The Service Merchandise store closed in 1997 when the company went bankrupt. Sav-on sold this store to Longs after their short tenure up here in Northern California prior to being affiliated with Lucky Stores. Safeway still remains in their space but the layout of the store and the interior signage is VERY strange. Like Safeway the Longs Drug Store has a strange interior layout but the signage is similar to that of many Longs locations. The Service Merchandise building is now occupied by a Bally Total Fitness Club.
This store had a large arch spanning over its facade as it was somewhat of a trademark element for White Front. I do not know of any buildings that still have the arch and Im quite sure there arent any but if Im wrong please let me know!
UPDATE: As of March 2014 little has changed aside from the Longs Drugs become a CVS Pharmacy. The interior of the former Longs has not changed at all although some old photographs of an unknown Longs location were mysteriously placed at the entrance of the store. The manager said he found the photos in their back room and" thought they were neat" and brought them up "for people to see". I complimented him for showcasing the old photos and he was happy for me to take some photos of the old Longs décor!
