Turf houses

This is a good example of a Icelandic turf house, not in use today (maybe somewhere in Iceland). This house was the result of a difficult climate and the relative difficulty in obtaining other construction materials in sufficient quantities. This kind of house offer a good isolation as compared as to buildings solely made of wood or stone. Foundation is made of flat stones, upon this, was built a wooden frame which would hold the load of the turf.
