The castle cannon of Winsen Luhe
The cannon was never used for defense, it was installed in 1917 as a decoration in the castle courtyard.
The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1299 and was probably built around 1230.
It was of course expanded and rebuilt several times. Duchess Dorothea, daughter of the Danish King Christian III, had the castle rebuilt around 1600, giving it the shape it has today.
After her death, the castle became the administrative seat of Winsen. The district court moved into the castle in 1852 and is still based there today.
