1926 Karrier tow truck
Karrier Motors, before becoming part of the Rootes group, were based in Huddersfield. Many unkind things have been said about the reliability of early Karriers and Manchester Museum of Transport’s experience of this vehicle only reinforces this view.
Despite the make's poor reputation, this 1926 Karrier YM 9410 was bought by Stockport Corporation Tramways as a petrol tanker from Shell and converted for use as a tow wagon. It was in occasional use – complete with solid tyres – from 1931 until 1970. Fleet No. 106 ventures onto the road only very occasionally as it has no front brakes, the rear brakes are quite weak and the clutch is either 'in' or 'out’!
