Northern Stone Row, Merrivale megalithic complex, Dartmoor

Blocking stone and remains of kerbed cairn, eastern end of stone row.

 

The Merrivale late Neolithic complex on the western side of Dartmoor comprises two double stone rows, a further four single stone rows, a stone circle and standing stone plus burial cists and cairns.

The two double stone rows run parallel to each other, in an east-west direction, separated by a 19th C. leat. The northern row is 180m. long with a blocking stone and remains of a kerbed cairn at the eastern end. The southern row is longer at 260m. and comprises approx. 200 stones. There are blocking stones at either end and a kerbed cairn in the centre. Just south of this row is a cist (stone lined burial chamber) with a huge broken capstone.

Further to the south is a stone circle with 11 small stones remaining and 40m. beyond that is a 3m. tall standing stone and a single stone row comprising 4 stones aligned northeast-southwest. To the west of the monolith are a further two short

stone rows running east-west.
