Revetment for a Column Base: Hadrian's Villa

A marble collar, a kind of revetment, carved to sheath a drum of another (presumably cheaper) material (as the pieces are not in situ, it is difficult to know if the small shaft placed between the base pieces represents the original core of the shaft. The two crescent-shaped pieces were fitted to represent a single Corinthian base. This example is from the so-called Imperial Triclinium at Hadrian's Villa (begun by Hadrian, r. 117-138 CE). The base fragments could represent construction from a period other than that of Hadrian. Similar bases can be seen in the sunken hippodrome at the Domus Flavia (Domitian's imperial palace) in Rome.
