Pompeii forum: South Portico

Tufa (tuff) columns along the south side of the civic forum of Pompeii. Note the pale band of modern concrete that supports the lowest level of the entablature of the colonnade. The original material seems to have been of wood, a seemingly unusual construction technique (see, too the same method used in for the colonnade in the Apollo precinct on the west side of the forum).
