Reflection on Lake/Pond

Upper Lausitz Heath and Pond Landscape

This UNESCO biosphere reserve of 301 km2 covers the largest contiguous pond landscape of Germany. Here, in a small area in the Northeast of Dresden, surprisingly different habitats and many plant and animal species can be found. The ponds have been used to breed carp since the 13th century. The local Slavic tribe of the Sorbs has been able to preserve its language and customs for some 1,500 years.

The biosphere reserve preserves the cultural landscape including its benefits both to human beings and to species such as otters, sea eagles and cranes. Fishermen and farmers are supported, e.g. through the successful innovation of the commercial product “organic carp”.

The biosphere reserve also promotes the local Sorbian culture. Biannual farmers’ markets in the biosphere reserve are accompanied by a wide range of Sorbian cultural events. Sustainable development is the key theme of all efforts in education and research. Activities such as excursions, seminars and summer camps particularly address young people.
