So... after having it for over two months, and nearly totalling it when I dropped it off the mount onto my head and then a concrete floor in December... I finally got first light on my Orion Optics VX8L Newtonian yesterday.
This is of course M42/43 and is actually data from the Newt at 1.2m focal length combined with a luminosity layer from my Megrez 72 data at 345mm focal length to boost the whispy stuff.
The Newt data is just 32 mins of 4 min subs plus a few minute stack of 30 second subs for the core and trapezium stars.
This was imaged using a Canon Eos 500D (modded) with an LP clip filter, mounted (bravely) on a HEQ5-Pro and guided (valiantly) by my SX Lodestar through an ST80 using PHD/EQmod.
The framing isn't great and theres still some issues with the focuser from the 'accident' but for a first image, I'm pretty happy with this.
