What a mouthful!

A mouthful of sand eels, ready to feed the lone youngster in the nesting burrow, who is patiently awaiting the return of busy parents.

Puffin spend the autumn and winter months in the open waters of the cold north Atlantic Ocean, but come the start of the breeding season in late spring, return to their clifftop colonies where they lay a single white egg.

Six weeks after hatching the young fledgling makes it way to the sea under safety of darkness. It does not return to dry land for several years.
