The possibilities and probabilities for what's on the end of the line is to fishos the most thrilling aspect of the catch. To us it was all about just trying to supplement our omega 3 provisions, preferably with a small pelagic fish.
I pressed rod into gimbal and it was clear that fortune was with us . This fish was manageable. Definitely not one of those 60 - 100 kg doggy monsters that smash your equipment, and often themselves in the process. Sure enough soon we were well satisfied when a small Dog Tooth Tuna was landed. To small to be tough and full of parasites it was an ideal size for the chef.
This species doesn't look , cook or taste like other Tuna because it is in fact not a Tuna at all but a member of the mackerel / bonito family . The Diamond islets are well known for them. Indeed for a short period a large live on board charter game boat was offering a " fly in/ out by sea plane fishing package " . Many serious fishing enthusiasts no doubt had catching a huge dog toothed Tuna on their bucket list . 250 nm by plane would have been a lot quicker and easier than than by boat . although I'm not sure about the landing !
