"Friday Evening" Wright's Lake, CA

On a regular basis I go to the mountains or the coast searching for good light. Sometimes I really work hard at it. Often the best light is found in odd places like a Walmart parking lot or when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic on the highway.

Last Friday while I was at work I kept noticing the clouds drifting over the distant Sierras. It's July. Clouds in July are a rare commodity in California. So as I was going through my work day I was flipping through my mental rolodex trying to think of some place that I could drive to after work to shoot the sunset. I settled on Wright's Lake in the Sierras about an hour and a half from my home. It's a place I have photographed many times yet it still pulls me in. I arrived at the lake just in time for sunset. Weekend campers were milling around. Loud happy voices echoed across the lake. Teenagers pushing each other into the water and laughing. As I surveyed the glassy water I heard a loud crash behind me. Someone had pushed a large canoe up on top of their SUV. As they gathered up the rest of their paddles and whatnot the canoe slid off the car and bounced loudly across the pavement. This was followed by a chorus of ..."Son of a %#!!%^ that thing just slid right off!!!" Yes, yes. Gravity always works my friend.

Meanwhile I could see the clouds over the mountains starting to change color so I slipped away from the "loud family" and found a peaceful spot further down the shore.

Good light has been hard to find lately so I was so thankful to God as the clouds began to glow and cast bright pink streaks across the lake. Not a bad Friday evening.
