Ranae Scott & Jovon Miller, Dancers, in "Devil's Lettuce"
Democratic Art, structured but unbounded by aristocratic rules of etiquette, taste & financial marketability, is to self & community what aspirin is to a headache, or romance is to love.
How so? Anything which stunts or what is worse, prohibits, one's freedom of imagination during childhood & youth, or later restricts expressions of what one has learned or created in consequence of the exercise of that freedom, is delaying or perverting the full human potential & development of heart & mind not only in the subjugated victim, but in the society. Closing & locking the gates of imagination & expression is murder of the soul.
This is as true for scientists, engineers & philosophers as it is for artists, & for every one of us. Imagination is the Explorer in each of us, who finds the smallest parts & also the greatest unity of those parts, including much that did not exist in the universe before our kind imagined & created it, in all that we do & all that because we continue to explore shall in time become able to do.
The poet, William Blake, said this best: "Damn braces: Bless relaxes."
