Petroc window, Caerphilly

Contemporary stained glass in St Martin's parish church, Caerphilly. This seems to represent St Petroc (judging by the stag and wolf in the lower parts of the window). Petroc was a 6th century preacher who was born in Wales. Most of his work, though, was in modern-day west country England, the counties of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Petroc was said to be the younger brother of St Gwynllyw who is represented in the next window (see here www.flickr.com/photos/robin_croft/3576869384/).

Petroc was said to have travelled to India where he tamed a wolf, which returned with him to Britain. There is also a story that a hunted stag took refuge in Petroc's cell: Petroc was able to persuade the hunter, King Contantine of Dunmonia, both to spare the stag's life and to convert to Christianity.
