This is Gran. When I was a little she taught me to toast scufflers on an open coal fire. Toast just doesn't seem to taste as good any other way. When she was younger she was into 'experimental cooking'. She once grilled some eggs. Only the once though! I've even heard that between the two great wars she used to cook a mean crow pie. I wonder if she still has the recipe.

 

Since she moved here she doesn't do the experimental cooking anymore. No longer does she bring mugs of hot chocolate for us in the depths of winter when we arrive on the motorbike. She now has people who attend to her every need.

 

Those eyes no longer twinkle back at you as they once did for they have grown dim. No more does she kick my butt at scrabble. No longer does she give out boiled sweets at a phenomenal rate.

 

And yet there are still fleeting flashes of brilliance as she quizzes me at length about everything and anything. Times gone by… and times present. Who is...? How is...? Where is....? When is....?

 

This is part of a bigger set that makes more sense as a whole.
