Mayan Codex

The Mayan codex is similar to that of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics -- and perhaps even graphic novels. Despite having a spoken language, the means of communication was often done via images, creating a kind of symbolism and visual storytelling. These images are just part of a much longer story of the conflicts the Mayans experienced, not long before Europeans arrived upon their shores along the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. I believe I have some other photos in my LACMA album that go further in showing how these codexes looked.
