The Drum was the first museum sub I toured that allowed visitors into the conning tower.
I used a similar plotter when I was in the Navy. You would place a chart on top, and set the scale of the chart. A light would appear under the chart, which you would set at your current position. You would plug in your ship's course and speed, and the light would move, giving you an estimated position. Of course, this did not take into account set and drift (caused by currents) or steering errors by the helmsman.
