Druk Wangyal Chortens at Dochula Pass 3100m (34)

The 108 memorial chortens or stupas which are known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens were the inspiration of Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother. The chortens are red-band or khangzang chortens, in the local language they are called gYul Las rNampar Gyal wai chortens or chortens of victory. They were built as a memorial in honour of the Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in December 2003 fighting the Assamese insurgents from India. They were completed in June 2004 and between the 19-20 June they were consecrated with religious rites. They are built at the highest point on the Dochula Pass at 3100m.

The pass is the highest point on the road between Thimphu and Punakha at an altitude of 3,100 m (10,200ft). It offers not only wonderful views of the Himalayas in Bhutan but also the highest mountain in Bhutan, Mount Masanggang at an height of 7,158m (23,484ft).
