This cannon keeps watch over the Mohawk River in Schenectady NY, where it has been a part of the city since the French and Indian war. The Montreal-forged cannon is believed to have been captured in Canada by British forces fighting the French. The 2300 lbs, 7 ft, 9 in. cannon was transported south and eventually deposited in Schenectady. Shortly afterwards the cannon was involved in a fatal mishap when it was improperly fired. In 1861 the cannon was fired off to commemorate President Abraham Lincoln, whose train was passing through Schenectady at the time. Unfortunately, the blast of the cannon shattered three of the train's windows. Later, the cannon was said to have been converted into a hitching post located at the corner of Broadway and Erie Blvd. The history of this cannon is documented and is quite fascinating. It richly deserves it's current home, overlooking the Mohawk River.
