Lost without you

Anima Series 5

Sitting No. 144

Lismore NSW 2015

The Latin root of ‘innocent’ refers to someone who doesn’t harm or someone who is not wounded, or harmed. As a former soldier, the relevance of innocence lies in my desire to re-experience such a quality or at least cultivate this quality in myself.

The loss of innocence I experienced as a teen-aged soldier is expressed artistically via an alter ego (model) who plays out this role in front of my camera. Their real-life innocence is the face through which I speak both this memory of myself and my aspiration to encourage such a quality in my own behaviour.

Not harming is important to me because, at some level, it helps to balance the ways I have behaved in the past. So innocence is one of the recurring themes within my art.
