What is strength?

What purpose does it serve?

How might it contribute to our lives in ways that are productive or creative?

Perhaps a way to answer such questions is to consider what strength is not.

Genuine strength is not something that comes at the expense of others. It is not the use of our physical and intellectual abilities to overpower, or dominate. The need to dominate is actually a form of weakness.

True strength does not have to show itself or prove anything, but is self-evident or implicit in nature.

It just is!

Inner strength is often the capacity ‘not’ to react, but to observe and listen. It affords us the luxury of not needing to say or do anything. It is the metaphoric rock upon which we stand and from where we may allow events to revolve around us – as opposed to the opposite.

Strength of character is not necessarily confidence, but is deeper and more substantial. Outward confidence is sometimes a façade we put on to mask our underlying fears. It is often an act we use to hide our self-doubt.

Strength can be faked in the short term, though not on the whole. It is any power that flows through us into the wider world and that sustains rather than weakens, that gives rather than takes. It is the ‘strength to see it through’, or the ‘strength to overcome’.

It is that which helps us to stand, when all we want to do is fall.
