The spectacular rice terraces of Batad Village in Ifugao Province, Philippines
If you look closely to the bottom half of the image you'll see the numerous steps used by the locals to scale one section of the terraces. It is a feat just to move from one terrace to another let alone moving grains and produce manually.
The farming practice in the mountainous provinces of northern Philippines dates back to more than 2000 years. Due to the daunting landscape, the use of modern machinery is minimal except perhaps for milling the grains. The terrace construction, upkeep and irrigation is an astounding feat of engineering and manual workmanship. Plowing and transplanting each rice seedling is a back-breaking activity.
Beautiful in their grandeur, these terraces are testaments to the harsh traditional life in northern Philippines and the hardiness and astounding industry of the locals who live there.
