ESI W Florida Index 45 - Tahiti Beach Yucca Species 2 5/24/05

This Northernmost area of Tahiti Beach is subject to washover in tropical storms. The tidal surge of Dennis and other hurricanes caused significant leveling of the sandy, oyster shell mound that runs parallel to the shoreline. A line a cabbage palms stand like sentinels guarding the fragile habitat of the marsh. Yucca and other extremely xeric vegetation grows in this area of beach scrub. West of this mounding is marsh habitat that is fed by Mallard Slough and the brackish waters of Big Bayou. This is one of several locations along this East Shore of St. Vincent that may eventually break through, separating this higher, "Dry Bar" ridge from the rest of the island. According to geologist Dr. Jack Rink, the North side of the island is slowly subsiding
