Foraging Turnstone!

A Turnstone foraging at low tide along the edge of the Deben at Woodbridge!

Turnstones can be seen for most of the year in the UK. Northern European birds pass through in July and August and again in spring. Birds from Canada and Greenland arrive in August and stay until May. Some non-breeding birds may stay for the summer. They can be spotted all along the UK coastline, on rocky, sandy, and muddy shores, and feeding by seawalls and jetties.

Turnstones eat mainly insects and larvae during breeding season as well as crustaceans, molluscs, worms, small fish, carrion, and birds’ eggs. They forage by turning over stones, as suggested by its name, but also seaweed, shells, leaves, and other objects. Turnstones are frequent scavengers and will take bread from humans.
