Matt Hyatt says: A simple car, a simple dress, a long dirt road and farmland remind me that things used to be, well, simpler. Doesn't this picture look like one you could just walk into and feel happy and safe?

Matt Hyatt says: Man, can you imagine having one of these painted up vans today? It'd be a show-stopper for sure!

Matt Hyatt says: For decades, the Beetle was a car with broad appeal. As I look at these pictures, it's impossible to ignore the abundant pride and joy so evident in the owners' faces.

Matt Hyatt says: For millions of people, the VW Bug was the perfect car. Affordable, comfortable and reliable, it was ideal for young families. I bet the kids enjoyed riding in them as much as the parents enjoyed driving them.

Matt Hyatt says: This may not be the sharpest photo, but that's probably because it looks like they were driving down the road while it was taken. Sharp or not, it's a terrific "historical document"! I thought the kids' car seats were fascinating. They must have been made for convenience, not safety, at that time.

Matt Hyatt says: Again, I'm thinking there must be a story here. Who are these people? How do they know each other? That must be the guy's car, right?

Matt Hyatt says: If I had to guess, I'd say this photo looks like it was taken around 1980 or 1981. What's your guess?

Matt Hyatt says: Even weathered and perhaps a bit neglected, the simple VW bug just oozes great design, doesn't it? And the best thing about them is they just keep going and going, getting us where we want to go without any fuss.

Matt Hyatt says: I would just LOVE to pack up my VW van with camping gear and drive to places like this. It looks like the perfect adventure to me.

Matt Hyatt says: No caption needed, really. Just a great picture of people enjoying a great car.

Matt Hyatt says: When I was 22 or so, I packed a suitcase into my VW Bug (#2) and moved from Tampa to Atlanta. Why Atlanta and not California, as originally planned? It occurred to me that my rusty little $500 car might not survive the trip, and I doubted I'd be able to talk my parents into picking me up in the middle of someplace like Oklahoma if it broke down. I chose Atlanta, in part, because I figured I could hitchhike home from there if I needed to. 18 years later, I'm still in Atlanta (sadly, sans classic VW).

Matt Hyatt says: See? More pride and joy. By the way, the oval-shaped rear window indicates an older car that's increasingly hard to come by. I'd LOVE to own one. Shoot, I'd love to SEE one!
