Martian Mineral Maps

Three views showing the edge of the north polar ice cap of Mars, all courtesy of the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), which flies on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. CRISM can tell what minerals are on the ground by analyzing their reflected spectra. In this image, the top section shows an area a few kilometers across in stretched natural colors. In the bottom sections, different colors represent different minerals. Mars explorers are using CRISM to make colorful and telling maps like these of locations all over the planet. See more.
