Edge of the Ice

One edge of the north polar ice cap of Mars (upper right), a seasonal ice sheet (left) and an arctic dune field (lower third), as seen by the Mars Express orbiter. The area seen here is roughly a hundred kilometers wide. It is thought that when winter sets in, the Phoenix lander will eventually be buried beneath a blanket of carbon dioxide ice.
