Entrance to Ghetto Nuovo Venice
Originally proposed by Zacaria Dolfin in 1515, Ghetto Nuovo was planned to isolate the Jewish inhabitants in Venice on an island which was only accessible during the day, as drawbriges were closed every night. Jews were obliged to return by dusk as the nocturnal access to the greater city was denied as windows were boarded up, bridges drawn, and balconies removed. The canals outside the area were patroled to create sheer walls.
