Holleford meteor crater

Looking roughly north-west over some of the buildings on Crater Farm. The depression with the reddish trees in the background is roughly the centre of the Holleford meteor crater, which is much more dramatic "in person" than it seems here.

According to the Wikipedia entry, it is approximately 550 million years old (give or take about 200 million years), putting it in either the Ediacaran or Cambrian periods. It was not recognized as such until the 1950s.

I think it's tremendously cool that such a thing exists about a half an hour's drive from where I grew up.
