1960 - Rain, Steam, and Smog..

J69 68619 - the 'East Side Pilot' - at Liverpool Street station in 1960, ready to haul the R.C.T.S. 'Great Eastern Suburban Rail Tour', on a cold, wet, smoggy day in November 1960.

The loco is in its usual immaculate condition, in Great Eastern Railway lined blue livery, with the company crest below the BR number.. The highly-polished side tank is showing the reflections of people on the platform..

68619 was withdrawn in 1961, and - sadly - scrapped almost immediately..

The only remaining example is 68633, preserved as GER No. 87, currently at the National Railway Museum.

Today, this is all buried under concrete, steel, and glass..
