1961 – N7 Arrival....

Taken on June 24th 1961

Grimy ex-GER/LNER N7 0-6-2T 69670 just arrived at North Woolwich station with the 12:18pm service from Stratford, on a sunny day in June 1961. The forest of dockyard cranes and the funnels of two ships can be seen in the distance, in the Royal Albert Dock.. The loco is displaying a Great Eastern-era route code, with a dark red/brown centre on one of the discs..

The loco had entered service in 1926, and was withdrawn in September 1961, and scrapped. Only one example of the class has survived.

The station finally closed down at the end of 2006, and today (2025) the tracks and the cranes and ships have all gone, but the platform on the left still exists - derelict and overgrown.

Restored from a faded grainy (Agfacolor) original..

Original slide - property of Robert Gadsdon
